How are you going to make sure that on January 1, 2009, you are in a different place (or a better position) than you are in now? What steps are you going to take that will insure that there is movement in the right direction? Often we set our goals unrealistically high and then we set ourselves up for a fall and we disappoint ourselves. Movement is what matters most. We feel better when we are moving in the right direction. How can we know if we are going in the right direction if we don't know where we're going? If we let the wind blow us here and there we will end up nowhere. Events control us until we take control over our own lives. We can always control how we react to an event. We've learned to react in certain ways, but we can unlearn those responses. We can make decisions that will prevent us from reacting in destructive ways to events that are upsetting. Think of the endpoint first, where do you have to be on January 1, 2009? Not where do you want to be, but where do you absolutely have to be in your life on that date? See yourself at the next step by then, what is that step? What will you look like and what will your life look like with you in it? Then set out to get there.
