WHY HAVE A LIFE COACH?
These days, it seems, everywhere you turn, there is a life coach to help you with something, either losing weight, getting rich or advancing your career. It's becoming more and more necessary to have someone like this in our lives to help us organize and plan in a way that will be satisfying to us. Afterall, do you want to just plug along day after day in a miserable fashion or do you want to make the most out of life and fill your days with meaningful pursuits?
A few years back I was in a job that was absolutely miserable. Everyone was unhappy and a respected coworker said to me "just swallow the pill", meaning, put up with all the stuff and just collect your paycheck. This has always been a difficult thing for me to do. I usually don't stay in bad situations for long. His words inspired me to "spit the pill out" and I got out of that place.
A good coach will lead you in the opposite direction. They won't tell you to swallow the pill. They will empower you to advocate for yourself so that you have a sense of control over your life. They will hold you accountable so that you take responsibility when things go right and when they go wrong. Some events in life are unavoidable and unwanted and are not meant to be punishments. The difficult challenges in life, are put there so that we can learn, grow and become better human beings.
A coach will lift you out of the ruts that you're stuck in and shift you to firmer ground. Life coaching can sometimes feel like psychotherapy but it isn't mean to be that. Psychotherapy has a place in the world and life coaching might lead you to go into therapy in order to work on some particular issues that come up in the coaching sessions. The purpose of having a life coach is to create a more balanced and satisfying life. There is a lot you can do to turn things around but having another person to guide you, encourage you and hold you accountable can make the difference between dreaming about such a life and actually having it.
