My experience with Christmas growing up was as someone whose family didn't celebrate it because of religious beliefs. It was the holiday to top all holidays but we were watching it from the outside. That made the gift giving and the family gatherings seem that much more desirable. There is nothing worse in life, than feeling like you're on the outside.
Movies and television make Christmas look so warm and loving and it looks like every family comes to some resolution on this holiday. The truth is that only some have that kind of home life, maybe only a few. The build up can often be disappointing. Every year is different, depending on who is in my life and who isn't, who's available and who's not.
There's one consistant thread from year to year and that's that I have myself. I show up for myself every year no matter what. I have my faith and I have myself. This year I'm grateful and accepting. I have to accept the way things are with certain people because they are who they are and I am who I am. The more you try to turn someone into someone that they're not, the farther you drift apart. The same goes for yourself. The more you try to be someone that you're not, the more you drift from who you are. You betray yourself by doing that. Therefore, I've concluded this:
- Allow the ones you love to be who they are and by doing that you set them free.
- Allow yourself to be who you are and set yourself free.
- By doing both you've given others their freedom to be themselves and you are then free to be who you are.
Have a wonderful day, regardless of what you observe
Debbie
